Ryukyu Mura

3-25-16

Chaperoning Makayla’s second, second grade field trip to Ryukyu Mura. The Japanese word “Mura” translates as village. Ryukyu Mura is a recreation of a traditional village in the Ryukyu Islands (Okinawa was one of the Ryukyu Islands before it became part of the Japanese chain).

This is the best place to experience Okinawa’s culture, performances, and traditional foods. Rounding out the visit we were able to see a water buffalo with a traditional mill (sugar), feed carp in the pond, visit a pottery factory with traditional goods, and share in folk crafts, traditional music and dance. This was a fun place and sure kept all the second graders busy. I am glad that I only had to keep my eye on three, plus McKinley who was having a great time being just one of the girls

Behind the girls is a piece of a retired rope they used in the famous Naha tug-of-war that takes place every year.

A special show about the culture of ancient Okinawa

The girls thought it was gross that these two were showing there intestines... It was left at that. Really at a family park?
 The pottery factory

The water buffalo. A mom kept getting him free, but he kept putting his horns right back in there.

My favorite picture. She loved all the little elves around the park.

Mulberry Juice. After collecting mulberry leaves for Makayla's class, they were raising silk worms, I felt like I would treat myself to some juice. They had the neatest machine at this vendor hut. The machine seals the plastic top right on the cup after they fill it. Then you just poke a hole anywhere with your straw. I love it! The juice was very delicious too.

These were the little guys we had the pleasure to babysit over a long weekend. I couldn't really sleep the entire three night thinking about them crawling out of the container. Luckily they didn't and they were still somewhat small. These guys ended up getting huge!
I would still like to know why they will only eat mulberry leaves?
