Nakijin Castle and Honey

4-14-16

Went to visit the sea turtles at the Aquarium. You can’t come to Okinawa and not go to the world’s 3rd largest aquarium. To our surprise they added more rope obstacles to the rope park in front of the aquarium and the kids ran over to tackle them right away.

taking a break in the shade

My favorite garden eels

These tourists are taking pictures of me so I will take pictures of them haha love it
Proof that a great white shark was caught in the waters around Okinawa in 1989- never getting back in the water again!

A little passed the aquarium is a world heritage site, a castle ruin. We thought we’d check it out and continued north.

Nakijin Castle or Nakijin Gusuku (Ryukyuan castle or fortress) is located in Nakijin Village. Work began on its construction in the late 13th century and it had reached its final form by the beginning of the 15th century.  The castle is strategically sits on a lone hill and is well defended by natural features. There is a deep valley, river and then the cliffs surrounding it. This castle is also a location to view 15,000 Cherry blossom tress during the blooming season.

More stairs!

Very interesting choice of a photo prop

Hiking one of the trails around the castle grounds. These stones were so extremely slick just about everyone of us just about slipped.

THE HONEY STORE :

Since it seems like we're in the peak of allergy season everyone is talking about trying the local honey to relive symptoms. This is a little store with many different flavors of honey from all around the world including locally. We were able to sample 8 different flavors of honey and all agreed the blueberry was our favorite. The blueberries actually come from Canada and the honey is a collection from different countries.
Due to all the talk about using local honey they were out of stock of it. We were told it would be at least a couple of months before they received more inventory.
We felt like a true local and pulled right up on the sidewalk  and parked.

Leaving with a couple jars of honey and a few sugar highs
