Today is a sad day, Bau and Papa have to fly home today. So
I found a few points of interest near the airport that we could stop by while
they are waiting for their flight.
Our first stop was the Chinese Garden- Fukushen Gardens
This is a traditional Chinese Garden and located south
in the city of Naha. It was built in 1992 in celebration of Naha’s relationship
as a sister city to Fuzhou, China. It’s constructed almost entirely from
materials originating from Fuzhou that were shipped over.
This is a place you could spend all day at reading a book on
a bench, only taking breaks to walk to grounds now and then. The pond is in the
center of the garden and if full of koi and turtles. There are a few spots
where you can purchase food to feed them. The kids and I were getting a bit
frustrated that the koi fish kept stealing all the food before the turtles
could get to it.
The best part was walking behind the waterfall. It was a bit
slippery but looking out behind it was the best view, my camera didn’t do it
justice.
While walking down the street to the Gardens we passed a
temple and came back after we were finished.
Kume-koshi-byo is a Confucius Temple. It seems to have been
built in donations of about 260 million yen that was gathered in order to
introduce widely Confucian thought of Confucius.
After our sightseeing adventures we didn’t want to send our
visitors off with an empty tummy. We noticed a subway a few blocks away (First
one I have seen off base) and headed that way. Just like the other few places we
are used to (McDonald’s, Burger King, Starbucks) subway too, has a VERY
different menu including salmon, squid, shrimp…
*notice the cherry blossom wrappers
