Fukushen Gardens & Temple

4-17-16

Today is a sad day, Bau and Papa have to fly home today. So I found a few points of interest near the airport that we could stop by while they are waiting for their flight.

Our first stop was the Chinese Garden- Fukushen Gardens

This is a traditional Chinese Garden and located south in the city of Naha. It was built in 1992 in celebration of Naha’s relationship as a sister city to Fuzhou, China. It’s constructed almost entirely from materials originating from Fuzhou that were shipped over.

This is a place you could spend all day at reading a book on a bench, only taking breaks to walk to grounds now and then. The pond is in the center of the garden and if full of koi and turtles. There are a few spots where you can purchase food to feed them. The kids and I were getting a bit frustrated that the koi fish kept stealing all the food before the turtles could get to it.

The best part was walking behind the waterfall. It was a bit slippery but looking out behind it was the best view, my camera didn’t do it justice.

While walking down the street to the Gardens we passed a temple and came back after we were finished.

Kume-koshi-byo is a Confucius Temple. It seems to have been built in donations of about 260 million yen that was gathered in order to introduce widely Confucian thought of Confucius.

I liked the dragon pillars and the golden signs was a gift from Taiwan.

After our sightseeing adventures we didn’t want to send our visitors off with an empty tummy. We noticed a subway a few blocks away (First one I have seen off base) and headed that way. Just like the other few places we are used to (McDonald’s, Burger King, Starbucks) subway too, has a VERY different menu including salmon, squid, shrimp…

*notice the cherry blossom wrappers

Not back to counting the days until Bau and Papa come back to visit
